How to get forklift certified online
What OSHA requires
Formal instruction (lecture, video, or online), practical training and a hands-on evaluation on the specific equipment, and a re-evaluation at least every 3 years. The employer is responsible for certifying the operator. There is no OSHA-issued license; the certificate comes from the training and the employer records the evaluation.
What the online part covers
Forklift types and controls, the stability triangle and load center, capacity plates, traveling and maneuvering, ramps and docks, pedestrian safety, hazards in the workplace, pre-shift inspection, refueling and battery charging, and when to tag a truck out.
What the employer does
Shows you the specific truck, watches you operate it, and signs the evaluation. Most warehouses do this on your first day. If you are job hunting, having the formal instruction done already is what gets you through the door.
Cost and time
$20 and about 30 minutes for the formal instruction at ELDT365. Employers pay nothing for the evaluation since they do it in house.
Questions drivers ask
Is an online forklift certificate legitimate?
Yes for the formal instruction half. OSHA explicitly allows classroom, video, or online instruction. It is not complete until an employer does the hands-on evaluation.
How long does forklift certification last?
Operators must be re-evaluated at least every 3 years, or sooner after an accident, a near miss, or a change of equipment.
Does this go to the FMCSA?
No. Forklift is OSHA, not FMCSA. Nothing is filed to the registry; you get a certificate directly.
