How much does a HAZMAT endorsement cost?
The itemized cost
- ELDT hazmat theory: $20 at ELDT365. Some providers charge $50 to $150 for the same federal curriculum.
- TSA security threat assessment: $86.50, or $41 if you already hold a TWIC. Renewed every 5 years.
- State knowledge test and endorsement: $10 to $50 depending on the state.
- Fingerprinting: included in the TSA fee at enrollment centers.
What you get back
Hazmat is the highest-demand endorsement. Fuel haulers, chemical carriers, and tank fleets commonly pay $3,000 to $15,000 a year more than dry van work, and many will not interview a driver without the H. On those numbers the endorsement pays for itself in the first week.
Where people overspend
Paying $150 or more for the theory course. The FMCSA sets the curriculum and the 80 percent pass mark; every registered provider teaches the same units. Price is not part of the requirement.
Questions drivers ask
Is the TSA fee refundable if I am denied?
No. TSA keeps the fee. If you have a disqualifying conviction, check the TSA disqualifying offenses list before you pay.
Does my employer pay for hazmat?
Many carriers reimburse the TSA fee and the training once you are hired.
Can I renew hazmat without retaking training?
Yes. Renewal is the TSA reassessment plus whatever your state requires. ELDT is for first-time endorsements only.
