How to get a HAZMAT endorsement
Step 1: ELDT hazmat theory
Since February 2022 anyone adding an H endorsement for the first time must complete the hazmat theory curriculum in 49 CFR part 380, appendix D with a provider on the FMCSA registry. There is no behind-the-wheel requirement for hazmat, theory only. ELDT365 files your completion to the registry the moment you finish, so it is on record before you walk into the DMV.
Step 2: TSA security threat assessment
Apply at tsa.gov/hazmat or an enrollment center, get fingerprinted, and pay $86.50 (or $41 if you hold a valid TWIC). TSA checks criminal history, immigration status, and terrorism watchlists. Most results come back in 30 to 60 days. You can start this before or after the theory; many drivers do both the same week. The assessment is good for 5 years.
Step 3: State knowledge test
Take the hazmat knowledge test at your DMV. Typically 30 questions, 80 percent to pass, covering placards, shipping papers, loading and segregation, and emergency response, which is exactly what the ELDT theory teaches. Some states let you test before TSA clears and hold the endorsement until it does; others require clearance first.
Do you also need Tanker?
If you will haul fuel or liquid chemicals in bulk you also need the N (tanker) endorsement. Together they show as X on your license. Tanker has no ELDT requirement, just a knowledge test, and ELDT365 has a Tanker prep course for it.
Questions drivers ask
How long does the whole hazmat process take?
The theory is under an hour. TSA is the long pole at 30 to 60 days. Plan on 1 to 2 months from start to endorsement.
Does the hazmat endorsement expire?
The TSA assessment must be renewed every 5 years. The ELDT theory does not expire.
Do I need hazmat ELDT if I had the H before 2022?
No. ELDT applies only to first-time H endorsements after February 7, 2022. Renewals do not require it.
What does hazmat add to pay?
Fuel, chemical, and tank hauling jobs commonly pay several thousand dollars a year more than dry van, and many refuse to hire without it.
