New Jersey does not set school bus training hours. It sets topics: N.J.A.C. 6A:27-11 and 12 require the employer to run a safety training program covering student management, emergencies, evacuation drills, loading and unloading, child check, defensive driving and railroad crossings, plus a special-needs module. ELDT365 handles the separate federal theory for $20 per course.
Student management, emergency procedures, evacuation drills, loading and unloading, child check procedures, defensive driving, railroad crossings. Delivered by the board, CTSA or contractor.
Required by N.J.S.A. 18A:39-19.2 for drivers and aides transporting students with disabilities.
The OSP approval letter (criminal history and child abuse record check) is required before a driver is assigned a route.
The rule sets topics, not hours. Your program documents what was covered and when.
The employer: the board of education, a Cooperative Transportation Services Agency, or the contractor.
Federal theory for B, P and S, filed the same day. Because New Jersey does not set hours, the federal theory is often the longest single piece of a new driver's classroom time here, and the easiest to take off your trainers' plate.
Criminal history and child abuse record checks through NJDOE's Office of Student Protection. No route assignment until the approval letter is in hand.
Class B, Passenger and School Bus on ELDT365 while the OSP clearance runs. Filed the same day.
Student management, emergencies, evacuation drills, loading and unloading, child check, defensive driving, railroad crossings, and the special-needs module. Your board, CTSA or contractor delivers and documents it.
Your BTW is the federal BTW record under your registry listing. MVC checks the registry before the test.
No fixed interval in the rule; most operators run them annually. Keep the documentation with the OSP letter.
Class B, Passenger and School Bus are $20 each per driver. A driver who needs all three is $60; a Class B holder adding the two endorsements is $40. New Jersey fleets can put a card on file and be billed as they enroll, or prepay seats on a PO with a W-9 and a quote. No minimum and no contract. The federal explainer, pricing comparison and who-this-is-for detail are on the bus driver overview.
New Jersey's employer safety training program under N.J.A.C. 6A:27 satisfies New Jersey. It does not satisfy FMCSA. A driver getting a Class B, Passenger or School Bus endorsement for the first time since February 7, 2022 also needs a federal ELDT record from a provider on the Training Provider Registry before the NJ skills test. The two records live in two different systems: the state training with the NJDOE Office of Student Protection, the ELDT with FMCSA.
The employer, meaning the board of education, CTSA or school bus contractor, under NJDOE rules.
The rule requires employer "training updates" without a fixed interval; most operators run annual updates. ELDT has no refresher.
Not the whole thing, but often the largest single block. Your employer program still has to cover every topic in N.J.A.C. 6A:27 and the special-needs module, and you document that yourselves. What New Jersey does not do is force a fixed number of hours on top, which is why the federal theory, done online, ends up being most of a new driver's seat time here.
Yes. One school account can hold drivers from any number of districts, or you can open one account per district and keep the billing separate. Receipts are per driver either way, which is what your business office needs when the cost is passed back to members.
Moves to us: the federal theory for Class B, Passenger and School Bus, and the FMCSA filing. Stays with you: New Jersey's employer safety training program under N.J.A.C. 6A:27, behind-the-wheel, the physical, drug testing and background checks. Nothing about your New Jersey certificate changes.
Free school account, $20 per course per driver, filed to the FMCSA registry the same day. New Jersey's employer safety training program under N.J.A.C. 6A:27 stays exactly where it is.
