California has the heaviest school layer in the country: DMV occupational licensing for truck driving schools and instructors, and a 15-hour behind-the-wheel minimum certified on the DL 1236 before DMV will issue the CDL. None of that touches the online theory.
Truck driving schools and their instructors are licensed by DMV. That is a BTW requirement and it does not extend to an online theory provider.
At least 10 on public roads, certified on the DL 1236 by the school. Under Vehicle Code 15250.1, every 50 minutes of driving counts as an hour.
Section 2 is completed by a certified training provider. DMV will not issue the CDL without it. It is the school's document, not the theory provider's.
Any TPR-registered provider, including online-only. Federal rule, and California DMV accepts it.
Online, English or Spanish, about two hours for Class A. Filed to the registry the moment they pass. Your dashboard shows the timestamp.
Three attempts per test. DMV verifies theory on the registry before the skills test, and before the hazmat knowledge test for an H.
The DMV handbook minimum. Most schools run the 15 hours during this window.
Delivered by your licensed instructors, certified on the form, submitted to DMV. This is the part only a California-licensed school can do.
DMV appointment, or through an Employer Testing Program employer. Interim CDL valid 60 days on passing.
Yes. 49 CFR 380.703(i) says state qualification requirements for theory do not apply to online-only providers, and DMV checks the registry, not a state license, for the theory filing.
Yes. The registry keeps them as separate records matched by the driver's license number.
The DL 1236 certifies behind-the-wheel hours, not classroom. What you certify is the driving.
Yes. Every ELDT theory course is available in Spanish, and the DMV knowledge tests in California are still offered in multiple languages.
Free dashboard, $20 per student or seats, and your DL 1236 stays yours.
