How much does a Class A CDL cost?
The fixed costs
- ELDT theory: $20 at ELDT365, done online in about 2 hours.
- DOT medical exam: $50 to $150 at any certified medical examiner.
- CLP and CDL fees: $50 to $150 total in most states, more in a few.
- Skills test: free at some state sites, $100 to $300 at third-party testers.
The variable cost: behind-the-wheel
Private CDL schools charge $3,000 to $7,000 for a Class A program that includes truck time and usually the skills test. Community colleges are often $1,500 to $4,000 and sometimes eligible for grants or WIOA funding. Carrier-sponsored programs are free or low cost up front in exchange for a commitment to drive for that company, usually 6 to 12 months.
The cheapest legitimate path
Do the theory online for $20, take the permit tests yourself using free practice tests, then either find a carrier program or a community college for the truck time. Drivers who go that route often finish under $1,000 out of pocket.
What to avoid
Any "online CDL" that promises the whole license without truck time is not real. Behind-the-wheel training must be recorded on the FMCSA registry by a registered provider or your state will not let you test.
Questions drivers ask
Is the $20 ELDT course really the same requirement?
Yes. Theory is theory. The FMCSA requires the curriculum be covered and an 80 percent assessment passed by a registered provider. Price is not part of the rule.
Do employers reimburse CDL costs?
Many carriers reimburse school tuition after you drive for them for a set period, and some pay for training up front.
