How to get a Class A CDL

To get a Class A CDL you need a DOT medical card, a commercial learner permit, FMCSA ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel training from registered providers, and a passing score on the state skills test. The theory part takes about 2 hours online at ELDT365 for $20. Start to finish, most people are done in 3 to 8 weeks.

Step 1: Check the basics

You need to be 18 to drive within your state and 21 to cross state lines or haul hazmat. You need a valid regular license and a DOT medical examiner certificate, which any certified medical examiner can issue in a 20-minute exam.

Step 2: Get the commercial learner permit

The CLP requires passing knowledge tests at your DMV: general knowledge, combination vehicles, and air brakes for a Class A. Free practice tests for all three are on this site. You must hold the CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test.

Step 3: ELDT theory

Complete Class A theory with a provider on the FMCSA registry. ELDT365 covers all five required units online, in English or Spanish, and files your completion the moment you finish. You can do this before or after the permit.

Step 4: Behind-the-wheel training

Range and road training in a real Class A truck with a registered school or employer program. There is no federal hour minimum, but your school must certify you are proficient in every listed maneuver. This is the part that costs real money, typically $3,000 to $7,000 at a private school, often free through a carrier-sponsored program that asks for a work commitment.

Step 5: The skills test

Three parts: pre-trip inspection, basic control (backing maneuvers), and the road test. Pass all three, pay the state fee, and the Class A is issued.

Questions drivers ask

Can I skip a CDL school?

You can skip the theory classroom by doing it online, but behind-the-wheel training must be done with a registered provider in a real truck. A carrier training program counts.

How much does the whole thing cost?

ELDT theory is $20 at ELDT365. Permit and license fees run roughly $50 to $150 depending on the state. Behind-the-wheel training is the big variable, from free with a carrier to $7,000 at a private school.

Do I need ELDT if I had a CDL years ago?

If you held a Class A before February 7, 2022 and it lapsed, most states let you re-test without ELDT. Check with your state, rules vary.
