What is Class A ELDT?
Who has to take it
Anyone applying for a Class A CDL for the first time, and anyone upgrading from a Class B to a Class A. If you already held a Class A before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered and do not need ELDT for that class.
What Class A theory covers
The FMCSA sets the curriculum in 49 CFR part 380, appendix A. It has five units: basic operation (controls, shifting, backing, coupling), safe operating procedures (visual search, communication, speed and space management, night and extreme weather driving), advanced operating practices (hazard perception, skid control, railroad crossings), vehicle systems and malfunctions (pre-trip inspection, air brakes, roadside breakdowns), and non-driving activities (hours of service, medical requirements, whistleblower protection, drug and alcohol rules, trip planning, cargo).
There is no federal minimum number of hours for theory. You have to complete every unit and score at least 80 percent on the assessment.
Theory versus behind-the-wheel
ELDT has two halves. Theory is the classroom or online part and can be done anywhere. Behind-the-wheel (BTW) training is range and public-road practice in an actual Class A truck with a registered provider, usually a CDL school. Both must be recorded on the registry before your state will let you take the skills test. ELDT365 provides the theory half; your school or employer provides BTW.
How it gets to your DMV
ELDT365 is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. When you finish the course, we transmit your completion to the registry electronically. Your state licensing agency checks the registry when you schedule or take the skills test. You do not carry any paperwork; the record is federal.
Questions drivers ask
How long does Class A ELDT theory take?
Most drivers finish the ELDT365 Class A theory course in about 2 hours. It is self-paced, so you can stop and come back.
Does Class A ELDT give me a CDL?
No. It is a required step. You still need the permit, behind-the-wheel training with a registered school, and the state skills test.
Can I do ELDT theory before I have my permit?
Yes. Many drivers do the theory first, then take the permit knowledge tests, then do behind-the-wheel training.
Does ELDT expire?
No. Once your completion is on the registry it stays there.
