How much does ELDT cost in 2026?
The typical price range for online theory
When we checked public price pages from registered online providers in October 2026, Class A theory courses were listed from about $20 at the low end to about $70 at the high end. Some sites show a higher crossed out price next to a sale price, so look at what you will actually pay at checkout.
The federal theory curriculum is the same for every registered provider. A low price does not mean a weaker certificate. What counts is that the provider is on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry for your course and files your record on time.
Why some schools quote $100 or more for theory alone
Higher prices usually come from the format, not the content:
- Live or classroom teaching. Instructor-led theory classes that meet for hours a day over a week or two cost much more to run. One provider we checked lists an instructor-led theory option at several hundred dollars.
- Packages. Some schools only sell theory as part of a full program with behind-the-wheel training, so the theory price is not shown on its own.
- Extras. Permit test prep, endorsement courses or job placement help are sometimes folded into the price.
None of that is wrong. Just know what you are paying for. If you only need theory, you can buy it on its own.
Theory and behind-the-wheel can come from different providers
The FMCSA allows theory and behind-the-wheel (BTW) training to be delivered by separate training providers, as long as both are on the registry and both report your training. Many drivers take theory online for a low price and then pay a school or employer only for BTW. See ELDT theory vs behind-the-wheel for what each part covers.
BTW is where most of the cost of a CDL is. For the full picture, see how much a Class A CDL costs.
What a fair price should include
- The full federal theory curriculum for your course (Class A, Class B, B to A upgrade, HAZMAT, Passenger or School Bus).
- The final theory assessment. You need an overall score of 80 percent or more to pass.
- Filing your completion with the FMCSA. The rule is by midnight of the second business day after you finish.
- A written refund policy and a way to reach a real person.
Filing fees should be zero
The FMCSA does not charge training providers to register on the Training Provider Registry, and there is no government filing fee for the provider to pass on to you. Submitting your completion is part of the job you paid for. If a provider adds a separate filing fee, certificate fee or registry fee at checkout, treat it as part of the real price and compare on the total.
What ELDT365 costs
Our theory courses are $20 each. The HAZMAT and Tanker bundle is $35. Every course after your first is $5 off automatically when you are logged in. We file your completion with the FMCSA the same day you pass and email you exactly what was filed (name, license number and state) so you can check it. Every course is available in full Spanish. Questions drivers ask
Is a $20 ELDT course as valid as a $70 one?
Yes, if the provider is on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry for that course and files your record. The theory curriculum is set by federal rules, so the certificate counts the same.
Does ELDT theory cost include behind-the-wheel?
No. Online theory covers the knowledge part only. Class A and Class B also need behind-the-wheel training from a registered provider, which is priced separately.
Is there a government fee to file my ELDT?
No. The FMCSA does not charge providers to be on the registry, and a fair provider does not charge you extra to submit your completion.
Can I get ELDT theory for free?
Some employers and carriers pay for training for their new drivers. If you are paying yourself, compare the total price at checkout and make sure the provider is registered for your course.
