How long does it take for ELDT training to show in the registry?
The federal deadline
Under 49 CFR 380.717, after you pass, the provider must submit your training certification through the registry by midnight of the second business day. Business days skip weekends and federal holidays. So if you finish on a Friday, the deadline is midnight Tuesday. If you finish on a Wednesday, it is midnight Friday.
That is the latest a provider may file. Nothing stops them from filing sooner.
When your DMV can see it
The DMV does not wait for a paper certificate. Before your first Class A or B skills test, your first Passenger or School Bus skills test, or your first HAZMAT knowledge test, the state pulls your record from the registry through its own system. FMCSA says you cannot take that test until your training is submitted and accessed by the state.
We could not confirm a set number of hours for every state, so if your test is close, call your state DMV and ask whether they can see your ELDT record before you go in.
What delays it
- Wrong license or permit number. One swapped digit and the state finds nothing under your number.
- Name mismatch. A nickname, a missing second last name or a typo can keep the record from matching your permit.
- Wrong issuing state. Common if you moved or trained out of state.
- New permit number. If your state issued a new permit after you trained, the record still carries the old number.
- Provider removed from the registry. Training done after a provider's removal is invalid, and the state cannot verify it.
- Slow provider. Some providers wait until the last hour, or miss the deadline.
If your provider files late
FMCSA says there is no penalty on the driver when the provider is late. The cost is time: you cannot test until the record is in. Contact the provider in writing, keep a copy, and check your record at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/Check. If the provider cannot file at all, read what to do when your provider cannot file.
Plan your test date around it
- Finish theory at least a few business days before your skills test or HAZMAT knowledge test.
- Check your own record before you go to the DMV.
- Compare the name, license number and state on the record with your permit.
- If you are taking behind-the-wheel too, remember that part is filed separately by the school that trains you.
How ELDT365 handles it
We file your completion with the FMCSA the same day you pass, not on day two. Then we email you exactly what was filed (name, license number, state) so you can catch a mistake right away instead of at the DMV counter. Our theory courses are $20.
Questions drivers ask
Does the two business day rule start when I pass or when I start?
When you successfully complete the training, which for theory means passing the final assessment with at least 80 percent.
Can I take my skills test the day after I finish theory?
Only if your record is already in the registry and your state can see it. Filing the same day helps, but check with your DMV before you book.
My provider says they filed, but the DMV cannot find it. Why?
Most often the license number, name or state on the record does not match your permit. Check it yourself at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/Check and ask the provider to correct anything that is off.
Does the DMV need my paper certificate?
The state verifies through the registry, not your paper. Keep your certificate email anyway, since it shows exactly what was filed.
