Plenty of good CDL schools have a yard, a truck and an instructor, and no interest in running a classroom or maintaining a theory curriculum. That is a complete school, as long as the theory is filed by someone registered to file it.
FMCSA's Training Provider Registry lists theory and behind-the-wheel providers separately, and a provider may register for either or both. The regulation was written for exactly this split: the theory curriculum in 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix A can be delivered online, the BTW curriculum cannot, and the state matches the two filings by driver.
Under 49 CFR 380.703(i), no state may impose its school-licensing rules on an online-only theory provider. So even in states that license physical truck driving schools, your students' online theory is accepted as long as the provider is on the registry.
What you keep: the part of training that actually needs a truck, an instructor and a yard, and the tuition that goes with it.
On tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. You attest to the BTW curriculum, the range and the vehicles. You do not need a theory instructor or a theory curriculum.
Give them your school link, or add them from your dashboard. They finish on their phone, usually before their first day in the yard.
Every student shows theory progress, score and the FMCSA filing timestamp. A student is ready for the range when their theory line turns green.
Under your own registration, with your own hours and your own timestamp. The state sees both filings and clears the driver to test.
Students pay $20 per course at checkout. Your dashboard and roster tools are free.
$20 per seat, blocks of 10, 25 or 50. You hand out codes and charge one tuition that includes theory.
Completions can be posted to your CRM or spreadsheet the moment they file. See Integrations.
If you want enrollment, scheduling, invoicing and ELDT in one system, Truckiro is ours too. Ask.
Not if you register as a BTW-only provider. The registry lets you attest to the BTW curriculum alone.
Theory must be complete before the state lets a driver take the skills test, but there is no rule that theory must finish before BTW starts. Most schools have students do theory during the first week.
They cannot. Our course requires 80 percent on every module and gives a review round on missed questions until they reach it. Nobody is filed under 80.
Yes: Hazmat, Passenger, and School Bus theory are filed to the registry the same way, and Tanker and Doubles/Triples are prep courses with a certificate.
Free dashboard, $20 theory filed the same day, and you keep the part of training that needs a truck.
